Tricky Women

Due to this year’s focus on Tricky Women 2005 in Great Britain, we will present two programs with a British accent at this year’s Diagonale.  For the first program we have chosen outstanding, inspiring works, fantastic for their subject matter, their humor and their technique, which well-illustrate the broad spectrum of animation.  In addition to this, we offer the opportunity to see the animation films that have just received top awards by an international jury in 2005, for the first time since that festival.  The Film Show of the Royal College of Art, London, distinguishes itself in its diversity and intensity, and documents the vivid and keen filmmaking of British art students.

Film Karawane

The Film-Karawane is our international dialogue with other festivals. This year we invited the festivals in Budapest, Göteborg and Maribor to present their most significant film of the year 2004.

The Hungarian selection is Másnap. Serene images of a lonely landscape in warm colours contrast the story of a profound disturbance: a man seems to lose himself in the distances, in the strange and violent relationships of the locals. Filmic time itself comes out of joint, the “before” and the “after” interlapse.

The Swedish contribution is Carl Johan De Geer’s Med kameran som tröst del 2. With great clarity and irony an ageing man sets out to discover his history - through the decades of his experience and the centuries of his family’s. Anecdotes and philosophical reflection blend into a unique filmic presentation.

DokMa, the documentary film festival in Maribor, presents Potem Goldy reče, to moraš pa enkrat napisati, a portrait of Paul Parin, the influential founder of ethno-psychoanalysis. Yet in this film he appears primarily as a great story teller: how his grandfather founded a coffee-monopoly in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and his father became a Swiss playboy and Slovenian landowner; of his fight with the Yugoslavian People’s Army against Nazism, his development as a doctor and ethnologist - and as a life long lover of Goldy Matthey.
