Wilhelm Gaube is a singular occurrence in Austrian film. For nearly forty years, he has created - with a remarkable will of his own - more than 250 documentary films about art and artists in Austria. A unique oeuvre which has remained in hiding, due to the fact that Gaube has been persistent in extracting himself and his work from a broader public. To this day, his films contrast the usual art documentary. They bear not only an unmistakable cinematic signature, but are also fundamentally interested in something other than artistic reverence, canonizing or appropriate interpretation. This way of working gives vitality priority over result. And, not least, aims at finding the most overall independence possible. And artistic freedom. Gaubes work is to be discovered with this in mind.
